What is Love?
Love is selflessness, love is something no human is capable of either giving or receiving.
We will always fail to be 100% selfless, as selflessness is an evolutionary trait that would spell certain demise to any species possessing it: it is contrary to the idea of survival or self-preservation. Or if you want to put it in a theological perspective, only God is perfect: He is perfect because He can be selfless, He needs no one/nothing else in order for Him exist.*
In any case, for one or both of the afforementioned reasons we will always be afraid of loving someone too much that there is nothing left of us; of loving someone too much and not getting anything at all in return (and "Thank you" counts as Something in return even if it is the very least amount of Something). Therefore in knowing that this is our nature, neither will we be able to truly receive love.
Love is and will always be an investment for us, whether we invest it in others or they invest it in us; we will never be able to trust that our love will be returned, or that love given to us doesn't obligate us to return the favour or require our utang na loob.**
(Am I making sense? People tell me that my opinions don't sound like opinions at all, more like flowered-up, long-winded nihilisms/atheisms/what-have-you. I'm an Agnostic okay, which is really glorified fence-sitting.)
*How can there be a God if there is no one else to acknowledge His existence? Define "existence". Does the tree that falls in the middle of the forest make a sound if no one is there to hear it?
**Is there such a thing as love freely given and in turn freely reciprocated?

Neo: I just have never...
Rama-Kandra: ...heard a program speak of love?
Neo: It's a... human emotion.
Rama-Kandra: No, it is a word. What matters is the connection the word implies. I see that you are in love. Can you tell me what you would give to hold on to that connection?
Neo: Anything.
Rama-Kandra: Then perhaps the reason you're here is not so different from the reason I'm here.
